DOP Submersible dredge pumps

The DOP450L is used in bulk sand mining operations

PROJECT SUMMARY

Location: West Sea, Korea
Period : year round
Product type : DOP450L with sand mining head
Contractor : N.N. sand mining company

Sand mining at sea to satisfy the increasing demand for concrete

In South Korea, a DOP450L is used in major sand mining operations. A made to measure new 4.000 m3 barge has been fitted out with a customised boom guiding all hydraulic hoses for the pump drive, the jet water hoses for the mining head as well as the Di 450 mm flexible rubber hoses for transporting the dredged mixture. Moreover it lowers and hoists the DOP450L to and from its dredging position.

The DOP450L is lowered to it's submersed dredging position by the boom

The DOP450L will mine sand at a max dredging depth of 100 m. Due to the flexible hoisting system, all dredging areas from -30 m to -100 m can be serviced. The sand is mined at various offshore locations, and it is pumped in the 4.000 m3 cargo hold. The barge is maneuvered using a tug.

The 450 mm discharge hoses bring the mined sand from the DOP450L on board

The delivery was a complete turnkey dredge package. Apart from the DOP submersible dredge pump, its diesel-hydraulic power pack was delivered, including the hydraulic hoses with quick couplings. Moreover a jet pack – being a diesel engine driving a jet water pump built into a sound attenuating casing – was delivered to supply the drag head with pressurised water thus boosting the mining operations.

Dredging instrumentation were also parts of the package : as the sand pump is working at an impressive dredging depth, detailed information on depth, rpm and pressure is vital for safe and efficient mining operations.

The Damen Field Service Engineers were on location for start up and crew training

The offshore mining operations are well scheduled due to the well balanced operational profile dictated by tidal differences. The DOP450L loads the barge in some 10 hours. The barge is then moored along quay to be emptied dry. All sand mined is used to feed the owners’ concrete factory.
