DOP Submersible dredge pumps

DOP150 creates underground car park

PROJECT SUMMARY

Location: Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Product: DOP Submersible Dredge Pump 150

Challendge: to remove clay around construction piles with no more space than 0.8m to 2.5m between them

Solution: Damen DOP 150 with special cutter head

Period: May – December 2013

The disk-knive cutting head of the DOP150 successfully cleaned the last 11.000 m3 of clay and peat from the bottom of the excavation site –without knocking any of the 2.500 piles.

In the city center of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, a covered market has recently been opened by Queen Máxima. The construction of the building, which includes a 4-storey underground car park, had a few challenges. One was how to remove clay around construction piles with no more space than 0.8m to 2.5m between them. The DOP150 provided the solution.

A fixed coupling connection to the boom of an excavator

The DOP150 was connected by a fixed coupling to the boom of an excavator, which delivered the hydraulic power for the DOP150. Hydraulic hoses were fixed to the boom – thus creating a compact cutter dredger. For the DOP150 Damen designed a special clay cutting head in cooperation with the contractor, Martens en van Oord.

The building pit was 123m by 90 m - yet it was completely filled with concrete piles. These piles reduced the maneuvering possibilities to a minimum. The pontoon-based excavator was positioned in the building pit using the most advanced equipment available – using both American and Russian satellite positioning. Doing so, damage to all elements in the building pit and to the dredging equipment was prevented.

With zero damage to all objects around.
